Very simple, a doula is a non-medical professional who supports mom and partner during the labor and delivery of their new baby.
Doulas do not provide medical advice but can be a good resource of information and can help open the dialogue between patient and caregiver. A doula does not perform medical procedures.
The needs of the expectant parents shape the role the doula will play in their life. For instance, if a mom just needs someone there as a coach during labor then that is what a doula is to her. If a mom needs help finding information then her doula can assist her in that manner.
Doula’s often tailor their services to fit the specific needs based on the initial interview between doula and client.
It is important for the doula to come to a client with an open mind and heart.
All families are different and for the benefit of the doula, each family can be a learning experience. A doula will want to talk with the expectant parents to find out about them on a personal level. This helps the doula understand their expectations and desires in regards to the pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
As a doula, I am not there to cultivate your pregnancy into what I believe is right or wrong. I am there to assist you and help you understand all the options available to you. I am there to help you choose the option that best fits your expectation. I am there to encourage you to make your own decisions and to provide support to the best of my ability.
